Chapter Thirty-Three: Last Skipping Pebble

~Maha Update~

*..........*..........*

Dear Raja,

At last!! My annoying bandage is off! I'm so glad to get rid of that thing. It's been annoying me from the moment I wore it. Everyone fussing, not letting me do things! Aman was right you know. Remember he said it last week? I'm a total Sanka! I wonder why God has made me like this. I guess it's so I would find a person like Arnav, who is so controlled. I bet he hasn't fallen even half as many times I have in my life!

I bet your happy though now too my wound has healed. You got really distressed when you saw it. But now look! All better now, so you don't need to be upset. I promise to try and not fall over again. Pakka promise.

Oh this reminds me. I told Arnav today that you and I are going for our yearly visit to the orphanage near our old house tomorrow. The kids LOVE it when you come Raja. Do you get annoyed when they start stroking you and petting you all at once? I don't think you do. You looks always happy for the attention. I have finished packing the little Meetai boxes for each of them. Hope they like it.

Anyways. We need to wake up early tomorrow don't we. And you look like your already dozed off on my bed. Night night Raja.

P.S Love you.

With that final stroke of her pen, Khushi closed her diary on her desk and stood up walking over to the bedside table. Putting her diary away, she laid down on her bed yawning, while pulling up the folded covers at the foot of the bed. Draping it first over Raja , so it covered til the middle of him, she then shuffled closer to him, covering herself too. With her hair spread on the pillow, Khushi laid her hand over Raja's relaxed paw before falling into a sweet slumber.

~

It was 9 am, when the Raizada's has got up and were now having breakfast. Kushal was normally reading his newspaper, while Devayani was cutting fruits with Chinky. The day was beautifully balanced with heat, but also a swirl of wind here and there.
Devayani smiled taking in the glow of the room: " Today is such a beautiful day isn't it, Chote? I feel like going out today? hmm?"
Aman grinned leaning against one of the chairs: " Dadiji, you should go out now, rather than later. It's supposed to rain in the evening."
Arnav agreeing with a deep tone: "Aman's right, Dadi. Where did you think of going?"
Kushal spoke up casually, while turning another page: "Mandir"

Everyone turned to Kushal curious. Kushal then firmly spoke: " I have arranged for you to go to that mandir you were talking about the other day."
Devayani smiled remembering: " Oh yes. But won't it be quite a long journey there Kushal?"
Arnav nodded: " Dadi shouldn't go alone Dada"
Kushal: " Chote will go with you Devayani. "
Arnav looked at his grandfather surprised: " I will? But Dada I still have work pend-"
Kushal: " I deal with it. I'll handle everything Chote. Anyways, you would let your Dadi go alone?"
Arnav: " Of course not, Dada. However I was thinking Buaji should go as she'd be better com-"
Kushal stopping the conversation: " Chote. I have said what is going to happen. You will accompany your Dadi to the Mandir today."

Folding his newspaper and leaving it on the table, Kushal then headed upstairs, with everyone silently watched accepting his decision.

~

Arnav got dressed simply in his black trousers and waist coat, with a light blue shirt beneath. He stood beside the door waiting for Devayani to come, when Aman came out with a bag for him. Arnav taking it.
Arnav asked: "What's this for?"
Aman cheerily: " Oh it's a few things Dadiji wanted with her for the visit, I added some food and water in there for the ride too Bhaiya."
As Arnav nodded thanking him, Devayani arrived in a teal green sari: " Shall we go Chote?"
Arnav smiled and led her out to the car waiting for them.

Shutting the car door for Dadi, Arnav went round to his side, only to pause seeing Khushi come out with a bag in her hands, Raja and Aman coming out after her. Arnav smirked seeing her wearing a red churidar. As they came down the few steps, Arnav went up meeting them half-way. Khushi shyly smiled, while Raja barked happily.
Aman smiled: " Bhaiya! I was heading for the market, but seeing Khushi was going to the Orphanage, I thought I'd walk with her a bit. Right Khushi?"
Khushi nodded smiling. There was suddenly an awkward silence between the three, making Aman feel like a gooseberry. He chuckled lightly scratching the back of his head.
Aman: "Err... I'll wait at the gate with Raja...ok? umm...yeah...Come Raja!"

Khushi bit her lip watching them leave, before looking at Arnav. Her heart fluttered seeing his eyes were fixed on her, with a teasing smirk on his lips. Feeling a light blush creep up on her, she diverted her eyes away to the bag in her hand.
Arnav huskily: "Going to the orphanage?"
Khushi nodded before walking down the steps round him, however her breath hitched as Arnav stopped her by blocking her way. It wasn't helping the redness in her cheeks at all.
Arnav leaning closer: "See you when I get back?"
Khushi looked around quickly with her eyes, checking no one was watching. She nodded again with a faint smile on her lips. Suddenly. feeling Arnav lean closer for a kiss, Khushi's eyes widened and shook her head at him. Arnav grinned at her like a Cheshire cat, before cheekily swooping in for a kiss on her cheek. He chuckled at her tiny squeak and felt her rush round him, down the stairs, off towards the main gates. Arnav bit his lip in a smile, turning to watch her leave with Aman and Raja. He looked down heading to the car, liking the start of his day very much.

~

Madhu cautiously walked up to Kushal who stood stiffly in the study with his hands behind his back, facing out into the garden.
Madhu: " Urm...Sir...You called for me?"
Kushal firmly: "Yes I did. I have called you here because what I have to say is important....*turning his head over his shoulder* Where's Khushi?"
Madhu replied: " Khushi? She's gone to visit to the orphanage. She goes-"
Kushal thoughtfully: "Yearly"
Madhu looking a bit surprised that he would have even noticed a fact like this: "Has she done something -"
Kushal tensing his body again: " I want you to pack Khushi's things for her. All her clothes etc. "
Madhu taken aback: " What? But Sir...why-"
Kushal turned to face Madhu dead in the eye: "When she returns... I want Khushi to leave this house. The cottage. Today. "

~

It was 1.30 pm when Khushi opened the door, stepping into the Raizada house with Raja. She held a bright smile on her face extremely happy that the children loved her gift and enjoyed the day playing games with her and Raja. She had thought of going to the market on the way home, to find Aman and come back with him, but she knew he'd probably be busy, so she came straight home.

However, when she entered the first thing she say was her Buaji, with a big bag beside her and a heartbroken expression on her face. Khushi's smile disappeared at an instant as she walked up to Madhu with concerned eyes. She held her hands and shook them gently to reply, but Madhu gave none. A tear simply slipped from her eyes. Khushi frowned and looked round to see Kushal standing in the middle of the hall facing the door with a stone face. Chinky just came into the hall to see all this too.
Chinky: "Buaji? Buaji what's going on? Why are you so sad? And this bag...Are you going somewhere?"
Khushi nodded as those where the questions doing through her mind too. But Madhu stood in woe.
Kushal announcing: "Khushi is leaving. This House and the cottage. Today. Right now. "

Chinky put a hand to her mouth shocked, while Khushi frowned not understanding. She looked down at the bag, realizing it was her things in there. Suddenly Madhu broke into sobs. She looked at Kushal and rushed over to him with her hands together.
Madhu: " Please sir. At least tell me why you are doing this?! Has Khushi done something wrong!? Please don't separate her from me! "
Kushal sternly not looking at her: " Then leave with her, but you must find your own arrangements to find and place to stay. You must find another way of earning income. "
Madhu knew that she herself couldn't leave. This was too short notice. A place for them to stay, a new job. She knew she had to stay to earn for the two of them. Her heart cried in silence.
Kushal continued: "You should be grateful that I have arranged a place for Khushi to stay and you don't have to pay the bills. I can assure you that where I am sending Khushi will be safe. You shall see it yourself when you go by car to drop her there. "
Madhu: "But this doesn't answer why Sir! Why are you sending Khushi aw-"
Kushal roughly: "I do not need give reason. This is my house. My premises."

Kushal turns swiftly entering the study down the corridor. Khushi after watching and hearing all this...didn't know what to think. What's going on? I'm...I'm leaving? Now? She felt slightly numb, which was why only sadness was evident on her expression but not tears. She felt lost and confused, which was why only hurt was felt in her heart and not anger. Looking down at Raja, who didn't seem to understand what was happening yet, Khushi quietly followed Kushal's footsteps into the study with Raja, leaving a distraught Madhu and supporting Chinky by her side.

Entering the study she held her hands low, tightly together. She looked upon the man that was telling her to leave but it didn't feel right. Kushal was facing the window, with his back towards Khushi. He tightened his jaw and wiped his threatening tear hearing the light sound of Khushi's payals walk slowly to his side. In the corner of his eye, he could see her staring at him innocently with Raja by her side. His heart tightened and throat started closed seeing Khushi sniff and lift her hands to her ears.

Muskaan pouted with her hands to her ears: "Sorry Babuji"

He turned immediately to Khushi and lowered her hands while shaking his head at her. Khushi frowned watching Kushal not lifting his eyes to hers.
Kushal huskily: "You have done nothing wrong. It's for your own good Betiya."
Lifting his eyes, he watched as Khushi tilted her head seeking for reason. Kushal however turned away again and swallowed before continuing firmly.
Kushal: " Indu is still loose. Your safer where I am sending you Khushi. The car is waiting for you outside. Go."

Khushi  felt tears fall from his eyes. Not for herself, but for the man in front of her. She knew there was more to this. She didn't know what. but she trusted him. She knew that Kushal cared for her more than he showed. She knows he's strict but as she always felt a good reason for it. She wiped her fresh tears and headed for the door only to pause.
Kushal gently: "Khushi?"
Khushi didn't turn. She simply listened.
Kushal nearly choked: " You....You can't take Raja with you. Where your going...Dogs are not allowed. Leave him here"

Khushi felt new tears appear in her eyes. She turned to look at Kushal's back shocked, but held it back looking down at her Raja staring up at her. She crouched down to her knees in front of him and stroked his mane. Raja started to whimper seeing Khushi's tears stream, making her put her arms round Raja tightly. Her body shuddered at the thought that she was leaving Raja, who was more than her best friend, but a part of her. She smiled sadly remembering back to what Chinky's father said.

Mukesh grandly: "And of course. How can there be Khushi betiya without Raja?!?! ey!?"

She pulled away from Raja and pointed at him and then to the floor, telling him to stay where he is. Raja sadly whimpered instantly feeling something was wrong. Khushi knew she had to leave now or else Raja wouldn't let her go. She kissed his crown before standing and rushing out the door. She shut the door behind her making Raja bark over and over angrily.

Khushi ran down the corridor to Madhu, wiping her tears furiously. She then picked up the bag and hugged Chinky with a sad smile.
Chinky holding her hand desperately: " You can't just leave! Let Dadiji and Arnav Bhaiya come back. They'll sort everything!"
Khushi stopped hearing Arnav's name. She had nearly forgotten. Arnav. But she didn't think any further as Madhu sadly led her out the house to the car.

~

In was 3 pm when Arnav arrived back with Devayani. They were greeted with Chinky quickly muttering that tea was ready for them in the conservatory. However, just before Chinky shot off Devayani called her.
Devayani concerned: "Chinky?"
Chinky stood stiffly as Devayani walked round her to her side. She felt her put a gentle hand on her shoulder. Chinky controlled herself and turned to her with a tight smile.
Chinky: " Y...Yes Dadiji?"
Devayani: "Is everything alright? You seem very...distant. Did anything happen? "
Chinky remembered back to Kushal's stern words and the consequence of her telling Devayani the injustice that has happened while they were out. Her fingers fidgeted as her mind debated what to do. She couldn't tell Arnav and Devayani out straight. What if Dadaji's was around? But remembering Madhu's begging expression and Khushi's heartbreaking smile, she gripped her hands tightly and looked into Devayani's eyes determined.

Chinky sadly: " Dadiji, Khushi she's- "
Devayani frowned: " Khushi? What's happened to Khushi? Isn't she back yet?"
Arnav's ears pricked up to this and stepped closer to the two, curious what was wrong with Khushi.
Madhu interrupted quickly: "Chinky!"
The three turned their heads to see Madhu coming towards them from the corridor. Chinky frowned seeing the unsettling casualness in her behavior.
Devayani directly: " Madhu betiya?"
Madhu smiled: " Your back? Tea's ready for you both."
Devayani firmly: " Why is Chinky upset? Is Khushi-"
Madhu laughed lightly: " No Maaji, Khushi hasn't come back yet. You see our little Chinky here is upset because Khushi wanted to stay at the orphanage for a couple of days with the children. She told me before she left. Chinky betiya wanted to go with, but I insisted for her to stay her. At my age I can't do everything. I do need a little help here and there."

Chinky gazed down upset and disappointed with Madhu's cover up of the reality of the situation. She was also concerned why Madhu didn't tell the truth. Arnav on the other hand was even more confused. What? But she never mentioned anything about this yesterday or this morning...

Arnav leaning closer: "See you when I get back?"
Khushi looked around quickly with her eyes, checking no one was watching. She nodded again with a faint smile on her lips.

Arnav thoughtful. Hmmm...Maybe she just forgot to tell me.
Devayani smiling: "Ohhhhh, *turning to Chinky* so that's why your sad. Don't worry betiya. Khushi won't stay there long I'm sure. "
Chinky bravely smiled and nodded. Madhu satisfied smiled tightly at Arnav and Devayani.
Madhu: " Maaji, Arnav bitwa? Why don't you both freshen up while Chinky and I get the rest of the snacks to the conservatory?"
Devayani nodded thanking her before heading upstairs, while Arnav did the same.

As Madhu and Chinky walked into the kitchen, Chinky immediately turned to Madhu.
Chinky upset: "Why didn't you say the truth Buaji? They could have helped get Khushi back! Buaji? Why? We need to tell-"
Madhu strictly turned to Chinky with glaring eyes and her finger to her lips: " Not a word Chinky. To anyone."
Chinky quietly: "But why Buaji? This isn't fair on Kh-"
Madhu firmly walked past Chinky: " The world isn't fair Chinky betiya. We have to live by it. Besides *angrily* maybe God has done this for a reason. To get my Titaliya away from Kushal's hatred. Away from the insults."
Chinky walked to her side and looked up at her sadly: " How will you live without Khushi Buaji?"
Madhu wiped the tears threatening to fall from her eyes: " I'll visit her every day. *sniff*"
Chinky gasped: " You know where Khushi is?! Where is she Buaji?!"
Madhu firmly: "I went with her to drop her off remember. *sniff* The less you know the better betiya. All I'm thankful about is that it's safe....But you have to promise me Chinky you won't breath a word of this to Maaji and especially to ...to Arnav bitwa."
Chinky countered: "Becuase he loves her, right?"

Madhu stared at Chinky in shock. Chinky smiled.
Chinky: "Aman told me. It's impossible not to tell that they have feelings for each other. *worried* But when Arnav bhaiya finds out he'd-"
Madhu held Chinky's hand desperately knowingly: "But he won't find out will he! You won't tell him betiya! Please!"
Chinky put her hand over hers: "I won't Buaji...but how long are you going to to keep saying Khushi is staying at the orphanage?"
Madhu knowing Chinky was right, looked away hoping....

~

In his black shirt, trousers and green jumper, Arnav came downstairs and started to walk down the corridor, heading for the conservatory. However, what stopped him in his tracks was that sound. Raja barking.

Frowning, Arnav stormed towards the barking which was coming from outside in the garden. Arnav looked out to see Raja barking over and over beside the pool. He wasn't barking at anything particular, Arnav noticed. Just barking. Enraged. Saddened. It then clicked in Arnav's mind making him think deeply.
Arnav murmured: "What the-"
Khushi took Raja this morning. So that means she did come back. Why did Buaji say she hasn't returned yet? Khushi wouldn't have come back just to leave Raja here? Knowing her she'd keep Raja with her....then why-?

  2. Whats happening?...why does Kushal want khushi out of the way...Is he afraid of loving khushi ...maybe becoz Muskaan was like khushi..and he is afraid that if he shows his fondness for khushi ,she too might leave him as Muskaan had done..

  8. I was scared of this what is happening....
Kushal character that u have created is so complicated. Sometime we think he is so rude and arrogant and sometime we think he is just showing to the world what he is not by the way.
Arnav and the Raja relationship has so much strong like K and R that Arnav can understand what R is trying to say..
    Uff...where is K..
